What Is Reiki/Reiki Energy Healing?
The word Reiki is made-up of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy.”
Reiki is actually described as “spiritually guided life force energy” and Reiki Energy is accessed by the Reiki Practitioner during a treatment.
Reiki is a form of energy medicine in which practitioners reportedly access universal life energy to heal patients, either by direct contact at specific hand positions or from a distance.
The Reiki Healing system using this energy for healing and personal growth was developed in Japan in the 1920s by Mikao Usui.
The Usui system of Reiki was first brought to the attention of the western world by Mrs Hawayo Takata in 1938.
Since then, Reiki Healing has spread around the globe and a number of different branches have been established with each developing their own form of teaching and practice.
Reiki Energy Healing is a simple, non-invasive, gentle yet powerful, natural and safe method of spiritual healing that enhances the body’s natural healing ability and promotes wellbeing.
Reiki is effective as self-treatment or when delivered by another person and it can be learned and practised by a person of any age.
Reiki does not depend on one’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone.
Reiki Treatment stands on its own as a healing practice and is also safely used to support orthodox and complimentary medicine.
Reiki doesn’t interfere with or diminish the intended effects of other health or medical practices.
It is increasingly accepted in health and community care facilities including hospitals, hospices and cancer support units.
Reiki is a technique which is commonly used for stress reduction and relaxation purposes.
A Reiki Treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit.
Reiki Healing is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive.
If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy, healthy and have better overall wellbeing.
What Happens During A Reiki Treatment/Reiki Energy Healing Treatment Session?
You will be asked to lay down on a massage table, couch, or bed.
You will be fully clothed and you may be asked to remove or loosen your belt so that your breathing is not restricted in any way.
It is best to choose loose-fitting garments to wear on the day of your appointment and wearing natural fabrics is best such as cotton, wool, or linen.
You may also be asked to remove any jewellery (rings, bracelets, pendants, etc.) prior to the session, so consider leaving these items at home.
You will be asked to remove your shoes (and possibly your socks).
The Reiki Master/Practitioner will usually create a relaxing atmosphere for their Reiki treatment sessions.
Each Reiki Master/Practitioner has their own method of creating a relaxed atmosphere for their clients and usually do things like set the mood with the use of dimmed lights, meditative music, or bubbling water fountains whilst there are some practitioners who prefer to be in a place that is completely silent without distraction of music of any kind, to conduct their Reiki sessions in.
During the Reiki Healing Treatment Session the Reiki Practitioner will place his/her hands lightly on different parts of your body.
The Reiki Practitioner serves as a vessel that supplies healing energies where they are most needed. Reiki’s ki-energies flow out of the practitioner’s body through the palms of the hands while they are touching the recipient’s body.
Some Reiki Practitioners will follow a predetermined sequence of hand placements, allowing their hands to rest on each body placement for 2 to 5 minutes before moving on to the next.
Empathic Reiki Practitioners will freely move their hands in no particular order to the areas where they “feel” that Reiki Healing is most needed.
Some Reiki Practitioners do not actually touch their clients, instead, they will hover their lifted palms a few inches above the reclined body.
Either way the Reiki Practitioner carries out his/her method of treatment the Reiki Energies will automatically flow to where they are supposed to, usually where the imbalances are in your body regardless of where the practitioner’s hands are placed.
Learning Reiki For Yourself!
An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class.
This ability is passed on during an “attunement” given by a Reiki Master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy”.
The ability to make use of Reiki Healing/Reiki Energy is not dependent on one’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone once ‘attuned’.
Receiving a treatment prior to taking a class can also be helpful in selecting your Reiki Master.
First Level Reiki Training is all that many people desire as spiritual growth and self-healing are supported through giving and receiving regular Reiki treatments.
However, additional training is available for those who wish to extend or go more deeply into their practice. Once trained, you can treat yourself, friends, family and animals.
I first turned to Reiki Energy Healing as an alternative to popping chemical-based pain medicines (long-term usage was really doing my head in) and I am so grateful that I did as it has helped in more ways than I ever thought it could … if I am having a pain flare-up I now have the ability to cope and deal with my pain more effectively without reaching out for ‘a pill to pop’ into my mouth!
